The Mount Isa community has benefited from the Installation of New Courtside Lighting of the Netball Courts at Wellington Oval in Soldiers Hill, thanks to new funding from a Sport Australia Move It AUS Community Sport Infrastructure Grant.
The $398,497 grant upgraded and installed new the new lighting and now Mount Isa netballers can play longer hours and with greater visibility.
Mount Isa Amateur Netball Association grant coordinator Bronwyn Pirihi said securing the funding for the upgrade took over two years.
"We had a wish list from local members and new lights were at the top of the list. We saw there was a grant opportunity and decided to go for it and put in a solid application," Ms Pirihi said.
"The new lights will provide a safer environment by adding light to areas that weren't previously visible, and now parents and players can stay longer."
Ms Pirihi said due to the extreme heat in Mount Isa it was critical that they upgraded to LED lighting as it was much safer and used less energy.
Sport Australia CEO Kate Palmer said Australians love their sport and local facilities were crucial in providing opportunities for sport and physical activity which helped communities particularly in rural and regional areas.
"These grants play an essential role in maintaining those facilities and are hugely appreciated at the local level," Ms Palmer said.
"Building better sporting facilities supports stronger, healthier communities, as it encourages greater physical activity, social connection and civic pride."
