After ongoing Police street checks it was gathered that at least 160 kids in Mount Isa were not enrolled for class.
Mount Isa Police Counsellor Mick Lowcock said the high amount of unregistered kids has led to organisations such as Community Connect making large efforts to get kids off the streets and into school.
"Community Connect has been doing great work trying to get kids to enrol at school," Mr Lowcock said.
Mr Lowcock said the issue was complex as schools could punish only those who are enrolled.
"Our education system states they can only be responsible for those who are at school so it's a matter for police and community organisations," he said.
"There's also the issue of kids coming from across the Northern Territory boarder and not leaving."
Mr Lowcock suggested introducing a national number for children at birth instead of the currently used state number once a child is enrolled in school, to combat cross border unenrolment.
