Mount Isa City Council is gearing up for the community event that will mark the official grand reopening of the new Isa Street Bridge, with a celebration of Mount Isa's past and artistic homages to the old bridge.

The event, which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony that will signify the bridge officially accepting traffic, will be held on Friday, December 13, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in the George McCoy Park area of Isa Street, as well as on the bridge itself.
During the event a sculpture that pays tribute to Mount Isa's past will be unveiled. The sculpture will be created using the steel and rubble from the old bridge, which was demolished in mid-May.
As well as this, one of the posts from the old bridge has been preserved and installed on the new structure.
The post was traditionally used as an unofficial floodwater level indicator that locals used to determine whether the bridge was still safe to cross during flooding events.
The grand reopening event will also include a live band, food and market stalls and a jumping castle for the kids.
Council is accepting expressions of interest from members of the public to display their classic, special or interesting car on the bridge during the event.
