The event will take place on Saturday November 30 at Tony White Oval from 4-8pm.
Event organiser Gary Osman said Mount Isa hasn't had a event like this for over 20 years.
"We wanted to create an event for the whole community but especially the family," Mr Osman said.
"The idea is for people to bring their own picnic basket and rug and enjoy all the things we have on offer."
Mr Osman said there would be live bands, puppet show, entertainment from Big Phil, creative workshops, tug-of-war, under 13s disco, and food and drink.
"There is going to be loads of activities and entertainment on the night," he said.
Event secretary Phil Norris said the picnic had been given magnificent support from Centacare.
The family picnic is an alcohol free event.
