Severe Fire Danger is forecast for both regions, with conditions becoming less extreme towards the south of the state.

After a Thursday where Melbourne broke a 100-year-old temperature record for November hitting 40.9C and creeping well into the 40s in the Mallee region and northern country towns, the weekend saw dozens of bushfires blazing across Victoria.

"This shows us what the risks will be in summer around Victoria, so we still have a long way to go to be ready," Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said on Thursday.

Nine bushfire advices were still ongoing on Sunday evening.

Although no communities were under threat, a bushfire in the Alpine region forced the closure of a number of walking tracks, with hikers advised to leave the area.

Most of the fires alight during the weekend have been in steep, remote country where the risk of falling trees adds to the difficulty for firefighters to access.

"The remote locations of these fires are proving to be challenging for our crews and we fully expect them to burn for a number of weeks as firefighters work hard to contain them," Forest Fire Management Victoria Hume Deputy Chief Fire Officer Aaron Kennedy said.
