The Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jess Gardner said Mount Isa was waking up to "bad dust conditions" which was caused by vigorous south easterly winds.
"We only need wind of 15 knots to pick up the dust from New South Wales, where it's incredibly dry and drought affected," Ms Gardner said.
"That dust has since travelled north with the south easterly winds."
Ms Gardner said the dust storm could be seen from the satellite.
"It stretched from Roma to Mount Isa and we can see it moving into the Northern Territory as well," she said.
"Conditions for Mount Isa should see the winds ease back this afternoon and we should see that dust settle.
"Definitely not expecting it to continue into tomorrow."
However with the dust expected to ease, there was a chance of a storm in Mount Isa for the next few days.
"There is a higher chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow (Thursday)," Ms Gardner said.
Thursday has a 40pc chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and reaching a top of 39 degrees.
Friday and Saturday has a 30pc chance of a shower in the evening and reaching a maximum temperature of 37 degrees.
