At the start of the year the Mount Isa Athletics and Cricket clubs got help to replace the heavily vandalised roller doors on the front of their shared shed at Sunset Oval. With the assistance of the Glencore Community Assistance Program the four front doors of the shed were replaced with secure, cyclone rated roller doors and the other three permanently secured shut in an $11,000 project.

Keen golfers have a million reasons to dig out their nine iron in July when Mount Isa Golf Club hosts the million-dollar hole-in-one challenge. The Outback Queensland Masters final event in Mount Isa features the challenge, which golfers can qualify for by competing in at least two other events in the series. The event created by Tourism and Events Queensland in partnership with Golf Australia across six Outback courses.
Mount Isa ladies cricket team FBI were off to Charters Towers to compete in the Gold Field Ashes tournament. FBI stood for Feral Bitches Inland who have entered in the cricket competition now for more then 18 years and continue to return annually. FBI coach Bev Peters they will compete against 18 other ladies teams, which was the highest amount of teams she had seen in the competition.
One young Mount Isa boy has set the Townville rugby league scene alight and now Malachi Retchford is taking the next step with a contract with the Sydney Roosters. Retchford who turned 18 in July will sign up for the Roosters's under 20 side and has already left North Queensland to pursue his dream of playing NRL.
The call went out in February for sports to get involved in the 2019 Great Western Games. The launch of the Games was washed out but the Games themselves will go ahead as planned in June. North Queensland Sports Foundation CEO Stephen Farrell called for sports to get involved. "At the moment we have 16 sports signed up which is pretty good, but what we would like to see is close to 25 sports participate.
The wash out also delayed the Mount Isa Sign On Expo by a week. When it happened more than 60 sports and community groups were represented at the Civic Centre.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival the committee have launched a new event called the Lorna Jane Dirty, Dusty Adventure Trail Run. There will be 13 man-made and natural quirky outback obstacles, or competitors can choose to just get out there and run.
Thirty-three teams competed in the IsaRats 2019 All Schools and Corporate Team Triathlon at Lake Moondarra on Sunday February 24, which is the biggest number of athletes the event has ever had. Teams competed in a 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run.
