A Mount Isa City Council spokesperson said the intersection upgrade would be ready in time before school returns next year.
"Works will continue up to the last day of the Christmas closures and progress early in January to be completed and commissioned in time for the start of school in 2020," the spokesperson said.
Council said the intersection was eligible for funding under the black spot scheme due to the regularity and severity of traffic incidents.
Project value is $305,000 all funded through the Queensland Transport Black Spot Funding program.
Around 400 cubic metres of concrete is being used to construct the roundabout and works were pushed out to accommodate the availability of Ergon crews to relocate the power poles through the intersection and install additional street lighting.
Council said concrete was used to construct the roundabout due to the asphalt surfacing work not being available locally within the funding time frame.
Access across this busy intersection will be under controlled measures until the concrete pavement cures to strength sufficient to take traffic.
