The PCYC Youth Zone started as an idea several months ago and is already a big time player in the Mount Isa community.
On Thursday December 12 the PCYC held their first Christmas party at the Youth Zone to say thank you to all of those who made the idea possible and also highlight the achievements the Youth Zone has made.
Mount Isa PCYC branch manager Sgt Bernadette Strow said she was amazed at how far the Youth Zone had come in just three months.
"It's gone from a few conversations to a huge working concept," Sgt Strow said.
"We have had so much support from local businesses and without them it would not have been possible."
Sgt Strow said a lot of credit had to go to Senior Constable Aimee Sewell who took control and created the entire program.
Snr Const Sewell said the kids look after the Youth Zone.
"There's a sense of pride here now," Snr Const Sewell said.
"Tonight's Christmas party was about recognising the supporters, and the kids being able to get up on stage and perform and show how much they have grown.
"It's a massive achievement to get them up on stage, they have been working hard on their self-esteem and confidence, respect and commitment."
Snr Const Sewell said they were striving to be leaders within the group and the numbers have been increasing.
"Last week we got 65 on one day and we usually get at least 30," she said.
"We knew having this facility that we would attract a high amount of kids, I think the thing that surprised us was the amount of kids aged nine to 14.
"We are starting to get teenagers which is really important in combating youth crime."
Snr Const Sewell said the program wasn't designed to just come down and have fun.
"There are rules in place like compulsory activities where everyone has to either participate or watch," she said.
"Next year we will see what 2020 brings."
