Queensland police confirmed on the afternoon of December 28 a 31-year-old NT man was located in a critical condition at the side of Lake Nash Road near the border. The man was transported to a medical clinic nearby where he died.

On January 7, police received reports of an abandoned vehicle on a property 130km south of Camooweal and with the help of a local tracker, police located three sets of footprints leading away from the vehicle.

After searching the immediate vicinity police later found the bodies of two Indigenous men 13 kilometres away from the vehicle.

The men were believed to be from Utopia north-east of Alice Springs, and were returning home after visiting family. Police said that on December 27 four men travelling in the abandoned vehicle visited Camooweal before three of them departed that evening to the Northern Territory.

The vehicle has been towed to Mount Isa for scientific and mechanical examination, but police have said preliminary investigations indicate the deaths are not suspicious.

Police said they wanted to make contact with Shirley Dixon of the Utopia community to help them with the investigation.
