With recent storm and shower activity increasing around Mount Isa, The North West Star has been tracking rainfall totals around the region, but we noticed something particularly unusual on Monday January 20.
When checking the 24 hour rainfall totals radar, the Bureau of Meteorology reported Mount Isa had received 250mm.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson confirmed that the Mount Isa radar had experienced inaccurate rainfall accumulation data totals.
"The Mount Isa radar experienced an issue with false echoes, which resulted in inaccurate rainfall accumulation data totals," the BoM spokesperson said.
"The data showed that excessive rainfall had fallen in the vicinity of the radar when in fact there had been little to no rainfall in the area at that time.
"The Bureau's radar technicians are aware of the issue and are working remotely to rectify the issue as soon as possible."
While the fault continues, the spokesperson said the Bureau did not rely on any one system.
"The Bureau uses a broad network of data sources, infrastructure, computer modelling and meteorological knowledge to generate its forecasts and warnings," she said
"These resilient, national systems allow the Bureau's meteorologists to produce reliable, efficient and effective warning products or flood and rainfall forecasts in areas where there is little or no radar coverage."
