The 8km trail run in Porcupine Gorge National Park 70km north of Hughenden has been run by Flinders Shire Council since 1991.
But now Council says this year's Challenge on Saturday, June 13 will be the final one.
"After a current review of our annual Porcupine Gorge Challenge, Flinders Shire Council has decided that this year's event, the 20th Hughenden Porcupine Gorge Challenge, will be the last," Council said.
"It has been a great pleasure to bring our beautiful Porcupine Gorge to you in a unique way but we believe it is time to say goodbye and look to the future and create a new, bigger and better event to show case our shire."
Mayor Jane McNamara told the ABC the event was expensive to run, limited by its location in a national park and they had to cap numbers.
"We have decided to concentrate on the new Hughenden Recreational Lake and other attractions closer to town," she said.
