What a fantastic and successful year of events we had in 2019 - and this year's calendar is looking just as good.

On Sunday rain forced the cancellation of the Splashez Swimming Pool events but we had the Australia Day Awards presentation and Citizenship Ceremony at the Civic Centre.
There we honoured and recognised the excellent work and achievements of some of our community's best, and more than 30 new citizens took their pledges to accept the responsibilities and privileges of Australian citizenship.
Hot on the heels of Australia Day is our annual Sign-On Expo for local community and sporting groups and organisations.
To be held on Saturday, February 1 at the Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre, the Expo always attracts a large number of sporting clubs and community groups and organisations, who are able to drum up interest in, and awareness of, who they are and what they do throughout the year.
Many enjoy a spike in member numbers as a result of the Expo, as people are able to either register their interest in joining or sign up on the spot.
Round 2 of Council's Community Grants Program and Major Events Sponsorship Program is opening on February 1, with applications accepted until March 1.
Both programs can greatly benefit and assist community groups, as well as sport and recreation clubs, so I strongly encourage these local organisations to apply for the latest round of either of these programs.
Recent Community Grants have helped to fund everything from a new kitchen for the Mount Isa Campdraft Association and upgraded security systems for the Sikaran Martial Arts Club, to new goal nets for the Mount Isa Hockey Association, so the program certainly does help our community in many fantastic ways.
Groups and clubs are also more than welcome to get in touch with Council's Community Development Officer if they require any further information, advice or clarification about the application process for a Community Grant or Major Event Sponsorship.
They are also encouraged to discuss any existing or upcoming requirements with our Community Development Officer.
Mount Isa's sporting clubs and community groups do so much in the city and these funding programs recognise and support their exemplary and ongoing efforts.
