The forecast is associated with a tropical low system and a monsoon trough across the Gulf of Carpentaria, resulting in rain across the region.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Markworth said the tropical low was slow moving and sitting across the south-west Gulf.
"It has been sitting in the Gulf like it has the last few days," Mr Markworth said.
"The low is currently over water but is expected to be over land tomorrow, before moving into the Northern Territory and then impacting the southern states."
Mr Markworth said a monsoon trough was last sitting over the Gulf and southern Gulf for the next few days.
"However it is very unlikely to see any cyclone develop when it is over land, it kills any development," he said.
"At this stage is does look like the monsoon will be sticking around for a while, but they to move very quickly."
