The community of Cloncurry came together to celebrate its dedicated locals and new citizens on Australia Day.
Locals gathered at the Cloncurry community precinct to watch two locals make their final pledge in becoming Australian citizens.
Liz Kitching and Jonie McCardle made the commitment at an affirmation ceremony conducted my Cloncurry Shire Council mayor Greg Campbell.
"Becoming citizens is a big celebration and by making this pledge it allows you the benefits and responsibilities of an Australian citizen," Cr Campbell said.
"It is great to have two more Australian citizens setting down roots in Cloncurry."
Following the affirmation ceremony, Cloncurry acknowledged the achievements of its community members at the Australia Day Award ceremony.
Citizen of the Year was awarded to Jean Tapp for her consistent volunteering and community involvement.
"Jean is an exceptional and invaluable contributor to the community. She is a caring person who has been involved in the community for many years. Jean has been involved in Cloncurry Lions, Cloncurry State School P&C and assists regularly at Blue Care.
"Jean regularly contributed to the respite activities at Blue Care, and without Jean's efforts the respite activities would not be near as enjoyable and successful as they are. Jean's focus is always to assist others and never asking anything in return."
The Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Taylor Jacobsen for her volunteering and community organisation involvement
"Taylor is an active community member and can be found assisting the race club and pony club, she is one of the first to arrive to assist the events and the last to leave.
"Taylor puts her hand up to volunteer at pony club, in the community and at school, she is an inspiration to her peers and has a strong love and care for animals. She is consistently working to improve her horsemanship skills and help others."
Community Event/Organisation of the Year was awarded to Cloncurry & District Race Club
Sports Administrator Award was awarded to Charlie and Denise Hill
Cultural Award was awarded to Ronald 'Hombre' Major.
The Achievement Awards were presented to Jill Smith, Graeme McDonald, Haylee Scanlan and Joe Robertson (Snr)
Dave Watt Memorial Junior Sports Award was presented to Sarah Scobie and the Senior Sports Award was presented to Damien McGee.
The Sarus Crane Environmental Award was awarded to Lindsey Perry and the Mayor's Community Spirit Award was the Cloncurry Community Flood Response 2019 which was accepted on behalf by the Lions Club.
The award ceremony was followed by a free barbecue breakfast, and despite the rain, an afternoon of cricket followed.
