Heatwave conditions will extend from south-west Western Australia through the interior district and across the Northern Territory and Queensland.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said severe to extreme heatwave conditions would impact the northern parts of the country.

"A heatwave will move across from the Northern Territory and impact parts of North West Queensland including Mount Isa," the BOM spokesperson said.

"This heatwave could exceed currently maximum daily temperature records. We are currently predicting a top of 44 degrees which is hotter then the February record of 43.5 degrees set in 2002.

"Overnight temperatures are also expected to increase but not break the monthly record."

Mount Isa is predicted to reach a top of 42 today (Friday February 14) with hot and sunny conditions and 10 per cent chance of a shower.

Saturday is predicted to be hot and sunny with a maximum temperature of 44 degrees and an overnight low of 25.

Sunday is also predicted to be hot and sunny with a top temperature of 44 degrees and an overnight low of 27.

On Monday heatwave conditions will ease reaching a top of 41 degrees and an overnight low of 26; with a 20 per cent chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

Tuesday will reach a top of 41 degrees and a low of 27 with a 30 per cent chance of a thunderstorm.

Wednesday will drop to 39 degrees and a low of 27 with a 40 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon.

Lake Moondarra is currently sitting at 89.5 per cent, while Lake Julius sits at 100 per cent.
