For many years, the Diesel Shed was Cloncurry was a hive of activity where all range of repairs and maintenance on locomotives and wagons was carried out by Queensland Rail staff and later by Aurizon staff.
In 2016, regional rail company Aurizon, who operates trains along the Mount Isa to Townsville corridor employing 50 staff in Cloncurry, closed the shed.
But now the company is planning to rejuvenate the site and create a state-of-the-art driver training facility for their train crews.
Mayor Greg Campbell said he was insistent on the facility be maintained and find new uses to ensure jobs and infrastructure is not lost.
"I'm very pleased to see Aurizon's commitment to invest in training new people in Cloncurry," Cr Campbell said.
"It shows the success in sensible, consistent lobbying and reinforces the commitment Aurizon has in keeping and growing its regional presence".
Cr Campbell said Cloncurry has been the hub for rail in the North West for many years and this investment in training and technology secures that position for years to come.
