Council will demolish the building and other structures on the site, which was destroyed by fire in April 2017, to make way for a community open space.
Local contractors installed temporary site fencing around the site earlier this week and will begin demolishing the site on the weekend..
Council said the demolition work will involve the use of heavy equipment such as an excavator and is expected to be completed by Saturday, March 21.
Council acquired the block of land last October.
Council said existing asbestos within the building was safely and professionally removed before the demolition.
Council has plans to turn the site, on the corner of Miles Street and Grace Street, into a practical open space that will suit a variety of community needs, and to that end has plans to create proposals for what can potentially be constructed on the half-acre block.
Council intends to release the proposals to the public for community consultation, with residents to be asked which plan they prefer and people's responses to be used to guide Council's decision as to how to develop the site going forward.
The site is about 2024 square metres in area in total.
"While it has been an eyesore in the Mount Isa CBD for a couple of years, it's a fairly large corner block and there is so much potential for that particular site," Mayor Joyce McCulloch said.
Harvey Norman Mount Isa is now in the Overlander shopping complex at the entrance to town having re-opened a month after the fire.
Police said the fire was not deliberately lit and likely caused by an electrical fault.
