As the COVID-19 pandemic kicks in, voters were notable by their absence despite voting being compulsory.
Mount Isa's six polling booths at schools (Spinifex High, Sunset, Barkly Hwy, Central, Happy Valley and Healy) were eerily empty with candidates and campaigners banned from standing outside.
Candidate corflutes urged people to take photos of their banners so they can follow their how to vote cards while the Electoral Commission is urging people to bring their own pens.
But even at Central State School, Mount Isa's busiest booth, hardly any voters were on the street around 10am.
It's likely a record number of people have already voted with more than 1.3 million electors had already early voted or requested a postal vote by Wednesday.
Mount Isa has three mayoral candidates, Mayor Joyce McCulloch, Danielle Slade and David Fletcher.
There are 16 vying for the six council spots, six current councillors with Mayor McCulloch, six with Danielle Slade, three with David Fletcher and independent candidate Kim Coghlan.
The polling booths close at 6pm.
