Geoscience Australia say the earthquake measured 4.8 on the Richter scale and there are reports of it being felt from Townsville in the north to Mackay in the south.
The epicentre of the quake was around 20km off-shore at a depth of 10 metres and it happened around 5.10pm local time.
Earthquakes between 4 and 5 on the Richter Scale are considered 'light" and can cause noise and objects inside houses to be disturbed but rarely causes damage.
