QFES will be assisting Mount Isa City Council to safely carry out a hazard reduction burn in the Leichhardt River this Saturday May 30.
It was scheduled for May 23 but was delayed a week due to the weather forecast.
The burn is scheduled to start around 10am and it will cover around 4km from the area around Flynn Street up to near Davis Road
Rural Fire Service Area Director Fiona Quirk said that will likely see smoke in the air and QFES Fire and Rescue crews will be on the ground for the entire day.
"The burn is being conducted as part of Operation Cool Burn, which is a state government initiative to mitigate bushfire risk" Ms Quirk said.
"This burn is what we classify as a high priority burn, the riverbed was identified as a hotspot, which anyone living in Mount Isa would agree with.
Ms Quirk said residents should keep doors and windows closed, not hang washing out to dry, and if suffering from a respiratory illness, they should keep medications close by.
"Drivers in the area will see a lot of smoke and should drive to conditions," she said.
