Council CEO Daryl Buckingham said the purpose of the security camera network was to deter crime, vandalism and damage of public property and Council facilities, contribute to an increased feeling of community safety and security, and assist police and other law enforcement agencies to prosecute criminal activities and minimise unlawful behaviour and nuisance in public places.
"Council has developed a draft policy and procedure to ensue that footage collected by the security cameras will only be used for approved purpose," Mr Buckingham said.
"Council acknowledges the financial assistance of $200,000 under the Safer Communities Fund provided by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science."
A draft copy of the policy and location map is available on Council's website.
The draft says signage will be placed at the cameras and the data will be stored for a minimum period of 30 days, though they will not be monitored in real time.
The cameras could also be used in flood events along the Flinders River "where there is a public safety and awareness need to display river levels at flood ways or river crossings."
