To be called Glencore "Queensland Metals Business" it will be headed up by Mount Isa-born Matt O'Neill who previous led the North Queensland copper operation.
Staff were informed of the move on Monday and it brings together copper assets like the mine in Mount Isa and Ernest Henry in Cloncurry with zinc assets such as George Fisher and Lady Loretta,
Glencore said a single management structure would place the business in a stronger and more sustainable position over the long term and would provide a platform for the development of a "long term polymetallic mining plan for the Mount Isa complex."
"This will ensure we are able to continue making a material socio-economic contribution to the regional community and the people of Queensland," the company said in a statement.
Details are not yet known how the business will restructure and what job losses would result.
"It is premature to comment (on that)," the company said.
"The first step involves putting in place a consultation process to understand how best to transition to a single management structure."
