The novel is the Friday Night Debrief by Mount Isa-born author Kylie Asmus, a romantic comedy fiction work which Ms Asmus has adapted to a screenplay which is well advanced in securing investment and a producer to bring the project to the screen.
The series shares the story of a woman taking a trip with her friends from Townsville to Mount Isa and her adventures along the Overlander's Way, with the characters witnessing the best of Outback Queensland's attractions and iconic events.
Overlander's Way Tourism Group chair and Richmond Mayor John Wharton said the fact it was set along the Overlander's Way was an incredible opportunity for the region and they have applied for state development funding while all the councils along the route have pledged $10,000 to the project.
"We are looking at a Netflix-type product based on the Overlanders Way and it's about these women who get together on a Friday night and talk about what they've been up to last week, it'll touch on women in mining, it'll touch on women in agriculture," Cr Wharton said.
"Isn't that funny, the Queensland government has recognised mining and agriculture have carried us through COVID-19, so the North West comes out pretty well."
A second positive would be the highlight of scenery along the way from the Great Barrier Reef to the colours of the Outback.
"I've seen cars pulled up just mesmerised by the horizon, people love it," Cr Wharton said.
"It could also highlight our events like Dirt N Dust and the Mount Isa Rodeo."
Cr Wharton said they confident the state to approve funding before calling for tenders and expressions of interest or quotes for producers and writers.
"It's such a good project you could probably sell it to a private investor but if you did that you'd lose control and they could go to New South Wales or someplace else," he said.
