The 20th Porcupine Gorge Challenge was to be hosted for the final time in 2020, but due to COVID-19 pandemic Flinders Shire Council has rescheduled the event for June 12, 2021.
Flinders Shire Council Mayor Jane McNamara said due to declining numbers of volunteers and competitors the Council made the decision to cease the event.
"It is very expensive to run because of the location," Cr McNamara said.
"Competitor numbers are capped by National Parks so you can only have a certain amount of people in the park at one time and we have to have a helicopter on stand-by to do the logistical tasks of dropping people and supplies into the gorge.
"It is very labour intensive and over the years our volunteers have been getting less and less. The event also doesn't encourage people to stay in town, they basically come to town, run and leave."
Cr McNamara said Council were looking into replacing the Porcupine Gorge Challenge with a new event.
"We are looking to replace it with something that we can incorporate our new Lake, Mount Walker, a fun run, a triathlon and something where people can actually have spectators," she said.
"Because with the Porcupine Gorge, unless you're down the bottom or top you don't see competitors because it is an 8.5 kilometre trail."
Cr McNamara said 2021 was the final year for competitors to tick the Porcupine Gorge Challenge off their bucket list.
"This will be the last chance to do it," she said.
"Unless some extreme sports organisation wants to take the event on, but Council wont be doing it anymore."
