Cloncurry Shire Council told The North West Star on July 8, that the essential build of the $2.06 million upgrade was complete but additional works to the pool were preventing the newly anticipated facility from opening.
"The forced closures due to coronavirus, has given council the opportunity to do the pool as well, so that is happening at the moment," mayor Greg Campbell said.
"From day one there has been issues with its initial construction. Since the pool was built there have been tiles cracking and breaking, so it was time to remove all of them and do them again.
Cr Campbell said while the focus was on that area of town, it was a good opportunity to upgrade the pool.
"Once the forced closure of the pool happened it was easier for the pool contractor to conduct the maintenance of the pool," Cr Campbell said.
"Although locals missed out on six weeks of pool time, it will be nice to have a brand new water park with upgraded existing infrastructure around.
"There is a little bit of work that the staff had to do for a reasonable price. But they've secured that and it fixes the on going maintenance of the pool. Now when we open everything will look schmick!"
The opening of the upgraded pool and the new water park will coincide with the Beat the Heat Festival in September.
"The COVID-19 delays have been slow but the quality is high," Cr Campbell said.
"There is nothing worst then rushing something to a deadline and its second rate, we deserve much better then that.
"We hope to create a bit of atmosphere with the opening tied in with Beat the Heat."
