The $60,000 project was jointly funded by the Local Government Cycle Network and Mount Isa City Council.

Mayor Danielle Slade said the three-metre wide pathway would ensure safety along a very busy Mount Isa highway.

"We want to divert those people who usually ride on the road, to move onto this path and stay safe," Cr Slade said.

"There is a lot of traffic along this road, and we want locals to be safe while exercising."

The pathway will start at the Isa Street/ Fourth Avenue intersection finish at Milne Bay Road.

"As the pathway moves through Soldiers Hill, it will continue along the median strip between the Barkly Highway and Markham Valley Road," Cr Slade said.

"Works had started in this area, but are currently on pause at the moment while consultants seek advice from the Department of Transport and Main Roads about the design.

"This is a really good initiative and it something we should have done years ago."

Cr Slade said there was another pathway under construction in Healy.

"We also have another pathway happening from Transfield Avenue to Brett Avenue," she said.

"We got $70,000 from the Cycle Network and Council also put in $70,000, resulting in this $140,000 project.

"It is good getting onto a few projects like that because sport and recreation are big thing in Mount Isa."
