Officers from the Mount Isa Road Policing Unit, Tactical Crime Squad, General Duties and Bedourie Police are currently in Birdsville working with Inspectors from the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Police said the purpose of this joint operation is to ensure everyone entering into Queensland is complying with the Chief Health Officers directions and to ensure they are not travelling into Queensland from a current COVID19 hotspot.
Officers are intercepting vehicles crossing the South Australian border and those coming into Queensland from the Simpson Desert.
All persons spoken to so far have been compliant with the current directions and have been in possession of the relevant pass or have been assisted by police to obtain the relevant pass.
Throughout the deployment, officers have had the opportunity to take in the stunning outback landscape and Birdsville landmarks.
Birdsville is normally home to two famous annual events, the Birdsville Races and the Big Red Bash, both cancelled this year due to COVID-19.
