Mr McCoy was in a single vehicle accident near Croydon on July 21, 2016.
Mr McCoy succumbed to multiple injuries and died at the scene.
He was buried at his home at Rainscourt Station.
Damon had attended Nudgee College and had a keen interest in cattle.
The McCoy family had recently purchased the property near Croydon to use as a breeding block, with Damon overseeing the operation.
A pre-inquest hearing in Cairns on Tuesday heard there were two men in the car at the time of the accident.
Representatives of Mr McCoy and the other man both spoke and there was doubt about who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The inquest has been scheduled for November and will attempt to determine the identity of the driver.
