Walk Ride Run for Palliative Care founders Liz Debney and Rowena Murphy have been walking buddies for a long time with Liz's husband Mal.
But when Mal died in the palliative care unit of Mount Isa Hospital in July 2018 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, the two ladies decided to not only raise funds but also awareness.
They remembered Mal expressed a desire quite a while ago to ride horses from Mount Isa to Cloncurry but it never happened.
And out of this an idea was born to walk-ride-run from Cloncurry to Mount Isa through that spectacular country to raise money for palliative care in Mount Isa and raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.
The original plan called for them to leave Cloncurry on June 28 and arrive in Mount Isa campdraft arena on July 4 in time for what would have been the annual draft.
But then COVID intervened and put the kybosh on both those plans forcing a cancellation for 2020.
"A huge thank you to our little committee - Tonka, Ranita, Jenny, Jesse and Alyce - planning was going so well and we will just have to pick up where we left off when life returns to normal," Liz and Rowena said.
The ladies are still keen to do the 120km walk and have been out on reconnaissance walks to keep fit.
They have now decided to push back the walk until July 2021 when it can be done in the cooler months.
"We will return. Mount Isa palliative care still needs a cuddle bed and pancreatic cancer is still out there," the said.
