The Dam is a popular recreational and camping site for locals and visitors and mustering helicopter pilot Dan Gresham recently spotted a patch of rubber vine there.
Mount Isa Landcare Secretary Mark Van Ryt said Mr Gresham provided them the GPS coordinates to allow them to investigate at a site on the western side opposite the access road to the boat ramp and dam wall.
"This location required us to organise simple water craft to paddle across the lake for an initial assessment and treatment," Mr Van Ryt said.
"We combined our rapid assessment with a BBQ and some outdoor fun at this beautiful location and found it was not a massive patch and a few of us should be able to treat it all in about half a day.
"We collected and bagged as many of the seed pods as we could reach. These seeds were then destroyed in the camp fire. This action helps reduce the spread of the weed pest".
Mr Van Ryt said it was concerning as they would need to scout the lake shore and search for more of the weed pest.
"It would be terrible outcome if the weed pest was to get out of control and continue to spread around the lake," he said.
"Our plan is to return to East Leichhart Dam in October with tinnies to ferry a couple teams across the lake."
Mr Van Ryt said it was most likely that rubber vine seeds were carried to the lake by water birds.
"East Leichhardt Dam is likely to become an ongoing weed monitoring site for Mount Isa Landcare," he said.
