Sydney Olympic fever was in full swing with Australia's gold medal winning women's beach volleyballers Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook on the front page.
In local news we reported that Mount Isa City Council proposed "Underground Mining World" was in limbo with the council's budgeted costs of $4.7 million likely to be well exceeded with the cost expected to be around $11 million. Project manager Stuart McLay said simply, the council could not afford it.
Of course the project was eventually opened at Hard Times mine on the future site of Outback at Isa.
Elsewhere the committee was preparing for the Casa Grande Ball on the following weekend while competition was fierce in the North West Star and Menzies Guardian Pharmacy baby photos competition.
