Harmony McGlinchey said her decision to fast-track her career path by studying a Certificate II in Health Support Services and a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance has paid off.
"I decided to enrol in TAFE at School while I completed Year 11 and 12 because I wanted to get a head start on my career. I've always been interested in health care and my dream is to become a nurse," Ms McGlinchey said.
"My TAFE Queensland training has really helped me because I have been accepted into James Cook University for an early offer program in nursing, which is really exciting."
Ms McGlinchey, 17, said gaining hands-on experience attending placement was the most rewarding part of her TAFE Queensland studies.
"Having the opportunity to shadow a clinic nurse at Gidgee Healing was amazing," she said.
"The experience taught me the basic skills nurses require, including how to manually take blood pressure, how to check glucose levels, how to take urine samples, how to interact with patients, and how to properly dress wounds. "My TAFE Queensland training and placement have taught me the baseline of what it is to be a nurse and I think it will really help me get that step up when I go to uni."
Ms McGlinchey said TAFE at School was a good opportunity for teenagers who want to explore their options.
"I would definitely encourage other students to enrol in TAFE at school because it can easily get them a head start in their chosen career," she said.
"TAFE at School will also help you confirm that the career path you're interested in is what you want to do. It will help you make sure that it's the industry you definitely want to pursue."
TAFE at School applications for 2021 are open now and interested students should speak to their school VET Coordinator. To find out more about TAFE at School, visit: www.tafeqld.edu.au/tafe-at-school
