The COVID Safe event will gather at the Barkly Hotel carpark before embarking on a tour of Mount Isa's best Christmas light displays.
Event organiser Megan Crowther said the event was COVID Safe and was expected to be a big event.
"It meets all the COVID rules, we are just going to need to find an innovative way to have our photos taken with Santa this year," Ms Crowther said.
"This year we have had a lot of events cancelled and travel plans restricted, so we wanted to make sure that we can continue this tradition for the Mount Isa community and celebrate the end of 2020.
"I think COVID-19 and lockdown has provided a chance for everyone to do projects around the home, so I am hoping that more locals will get involved this year in dressing up their house or business. There is still plenty of time to get involved, I see Clarke Street has some great ones up already."
Ms Crowther said this would be the ninth year of the annual event.

"Nine years ago we saw a need. One of the radio stations weren't doing it anymore so we wanted to make sure Mount Isa continued the Christmas spirit," she said.
"With thanks to the Mount Isa community, each year this event is getting bigger and better.
"I think the Christmas displays have also become a lot more innovative, going from wooden cut outs, lights and lights to music, and this year we are hoping to get some decorated businesses on board.
"I love Christmas you can ask anyone who knows me. This event has become a tradition and it's something my kids have grown up doing this year and hopefully other families get involved."
To be held on Sunday December 13, Ms Crowther said it would be a chance for families to get involved before they travelled away for the holidays.
"We generally try and keep it within December before people travel away, and you don't want to do it too late as Santa may not be available as he gets quite busy," she said.
"MOB-FM will again do the broadcast and the HOGs (Harley Owners Group) will also be in attendance and providing Santa.
"Elders Insurance have sponsored the best dressed house, and The Boss Shop has sponsored the best dressed vehicle."
