The annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal was launched in Mount Isa on Wednesday December 2, in conjunction with the Salvation Army, to help struggling locals enjoy Christmas this year.

Mount Isa Kmart store manager Alysse Winter said locals could get involved by placing a gift under the Kmart Wishing Tree, or donating money at the register or online.

"The Kmart Wishing Tree is about giving some gifts to those in need at Christmas, who may not necessarily be able to afford or have the ability to provide a great Christmas for their family.

"Gifts are required to be unwrapped and dropped in store, they will then be organised and distributed by the Salvation Army."

Ms Winter said COVID-19 had thrown a spanner in the works, therefore they didn't have a target to reach this year.

"We haven't set a goal this year, it's all about what the community can afford to give," she said.

"This year's the theme is 'Small Gift, Big Heart', so it's about what anyone can give."

Ms Winter asked that locals donate sooner rather then later as gifts needed to be processed and delivered before Christmas.

"The sooner we can get gifts under the tree the more time it gives the Salvos to organise the gifts," she said.

"Also some of the families requiring this assistance live in remote areas, so need time to distribute those."

Mount Isa Salvation Army Lieutenant Natalie Steele said last year they assisted 120 families around Mount Isa.

"We distributed over 700 gifts to 120 families around Mount Isa," Ms Steele said.

"This year we have five days scheduled leading up to Christmas, December 11-12, 18-19 and 22. So we are asking locals to drop off their gifts as soon as possible.

"This year we are also inviting families to come and chose their gifts this year, so it is a bit different to the way it was done a few years ago."

Mount Isa City Council representatives were at the launch including Deputy Mayor Phil Barwick, Cr Mick Tully, Cr George Fortune, and Cr Peta MacRae.

Deputy Mayor Phil Barwick encouraged locals to get involved in the worthwhile cause.

"Mount Isa has been lucky enough to escape COVID to some extent, but it is important for us to remember that there are people in our community who have experienced a downturn during this time.

"We need to dig a bit deeper and get some presents out to assist the Salvation Army to do their work."
