The charity is calling on people to donate the goods they don't want, don't fit or simply can't use, to save unwanted gifts from ending up in landfill.

The call comes as more Queenslanders than ever are facing hardship caused by unemployment, financial stress, threat of eviction and increased risk of homelessness due to the economic impacts of COVID-19.

Vinnies Queensland General Manager of Operations, Drew Eide, said the simple act of donating second-hand gifts and other unused items would have a significant impact in Queensland communities.

"If you're struggling to find room for all that stuff, your 'unwanted item' might be the perfect 'treasure' that someone else is searching for," Mr Eide said.

"No matter how plain or quirky, Vinnies welcomes all donations of useable gifts that are in good condition including quality clothing, furniture and household items.

"And by donating, you can feel good about helping Vinnies turn your unwanted presents into the perfect gift for struggling Queenslanders."

Mr Eide said Vinnies stores were one of the best places to find unique items, while helping the environment and supporting vulnerable Queenslanders.

"All proceeds from the sale of recycled gifts will go towards our many community programs including emergency assistance, housing and homelessness support, youth programs, disaster relief and more.," he said.

Donations are accepted at all Vinnies retail stores during operating hours or through donation bins located across the state. For shop opening hours go to www.qld.vinnies.org.au

To ensure gifts that are destined for a second life don't become waste, Queenslanders are encouraged to avoid leaving donations outside of Vinnies' shop fronts.
