The North West Hospital and Health Service has welcomed five new medical interns who have chosen to start their careers in Mount Isa.

Our 2021 interns come from Townsville, Murray River area, Cairns, Longreach, and Perth, and will complete five rotations across a wide range of specialities.
Acting Chief Executive for the NWHHS, Dr Karen Murphy, said the NWHHS has always been recognised by interns as a fantastic place for training and opportunities.
"We are always excited about welcoming our new interns and helping to them to grow and develop their careers," Dr Muphy said.
"The opportunities we provide at the NWHHS appeal to many interns who want to pursue a rewarding career in rural and remote medicine."
Dr Sam Bartsch has already spent time at NWHHS for his 2nd, 5th and 6th year placements and was attracted back because of the training opportunities and one-on-one teaching.
"The one-on-one learning out here is just so unique compared to the big cities and the patients you see here, and the demographics are just so different to the city - you learn so much more," Dr Bartsch said.
"I've signed up for the rural generalist pathway and I'm planning to be a rural GP. I came out here because it's the most rural spot you can go to for your internship, so I'm hoping to get as much real-world experience in rural communities as I can - it'll set me up the best for my future career."
Dr Murphy said having a strong cohort of first year doctors is important to the long-term future of the NWHHS and praises the work of NWHHS Director of Clinical Training, Dr Uli Orda and Senior Medical Education Officer, Sabine Orda who work together to enrol junior doctors.
