In the museum's 20 year history, no significant refurbishment works had been completed on the facility - until now.
The undertaking is a major internal and external redesign of the museum.
Underground Hospital and Museum volunteer coordinator Erica Shaw said while maintenance of the facility had been completed over the years this was the first major works to be conducted.
"Things like the deck being replaced have been maintained as things have become deteriorated, but no significant refurbishments works had been completed," Ms Shaw said.
"We have recently completed refurbishments at the tent house thanks to a successful grant application, now funds left over will go towards painting the museum inside and out.
"Thanks to other donations received we will be refreshing all the flooring and decking boards among other improvements."
Ms Shaw said refurbishments should be completed by April 1, but requires helping hands to get the job done.
"We have received a good response from the post we put on the Lend A Hand Facebook page, we were looking for some admin volunteers which I have received three interested persons which is great," she said.
"However we also need some assistance with landscaping works around the facility. Gardening is another big area that needs focus before opening up. Getting the gardens looking nice, weeding, leaf blowing, tree trimming, so it is a nice landscape when people visit.
"So we are still looking for more gardening volunteers and soon we will put a call out for tour guides and front of house."
Ms Shaw said despite being closed during 2020, she was hoping to see an influx of visitors returning this year.
"Last year we didn't open due to COVID-19 and the majority of our volunteers are elderly so we couldn't put them at risk with what was happening," she said.
"During that closure we completed the works on the tent house, which was a blessing to utilise that time for something that was critical to complete.
"From what we hear there are a lot of people planning trips to north west Queensland in 2021, so hopefully we will have a lot of tourists through the doors."
