A Mount Isa Rugby League selection was due to play an Atherton team A-Grade team on March 13 at Alec Inch Oval but the game has been cancelled "due to unforseen circumstances".
"MIRL will keep everyone posted of our upcoming season in the next week," the Association said in a social media post.
MIRL president Nick Lewry had been looking forward to "a big event" in Mount Isa as Atherton were a renowned district side of a grade standard higher than Mount Isa.
The local team were hoping for revenge.
Atherton defeated Mount Isa 46-10 when the two sides met last year on the Tablelands in the inaugural Katter Australia Party Cup with the Isa side travelling 15 hours by bus for the game.
There was supposed to be a ladies game in the lead-up to the Atherton game.
There will be three teams, two from Isa and one from Cloncurry in the inaugural ladies comp this year.
The International Legends of League game returns to Mount Isa on May.29.
