The donation of a Doppler ultrasound machine provides an additional service to the unit, welcomed by Nurse Unit Manager/Nurse Practitioner Candidate for Cancer Care, Nicole Williams as something that will make their lives easier.
"Our cancer patients are already going through a traumatising time in their lives, and repetitive blood tests can cause discomfort," Ms Williams said.
"This type of technology allows our nurses to easily find veins that are not visible to the naked eye."
Mrs Williams said she was appreciative of groups like Yelvertoft Campdraft that reach out to donate.
The groups' donation, also made possible by community member Professor Sabina Knight, was initiated when their friend Maree Balmain, a previous cancer patient, suggested the Doppler donation. Mrs Balmain received treatment in the Cancer Care Unit for 18 months and said that having a Doppler ultrasound machine on hand would have made her treatment a lot more pleasant.
"It will make a huge difference, knowing that people now have access to something that is going to make their treatment more comfortable," Ms Balmain said.
"The entire treatment process is already uncomfortable, without having added discomfort of multiple attempts to access people's veins. So, taking away any unnecessary discomfort is a win.
Yelvertoft Campdraft's Marcus Curr said he was delighted to make the local donation.
"I couldn't think of a better way for us to put money into something, a local service, where we can see where our fundraising efforts go. This is something that can help the treatment process, so we're more than happy to help", Mr Curr said.
