Police said that on Easter Sunday, April 4 at 9.20am, police from the Mount Isa District Road Policing Unit were conducting speed enforcement on the Barkly Highway as part of the Queensland Easter road safety campaign.
They intercepted a motorcycle rider speeding at 156km/h in a 110km/h zone.
A 46-year-old Mount Isa man was issued with a $1245 Traffic Infringement Notice, eight demerit points and will have his licence suspended for a period of six months.
Police said motorcyclists are some of the most vulnerable road users with research showing they are 30 times more likely to be killed in the event of a crash than occupants of a vehicle.
"So far this year, 22 motorcycle riders and one pillion passenger have lost their lives on Queensland roads. This is 13 more than this time last year," Mount Isa police said.
"It is estimated that approximately 70 per cent of these fatal crashes are due to rider error with excessive speed being a major contributing factor. Rider and driver behaviour on the road has direct consequences on your life and those around you."
