Bunnings appointed a building contractor in March and they now anticipate construction will get underway in early May, with the new store opening its doors to local customers in early 2022.
Bunnings said they will invest more than $19 million in the new store, which is expected to create additional jobs for local residents, as well as jobs throughout construction.
The new store on West St will span more than 5500 square metres, more than double the size of the existing store on Camooweal St and will provide customers with a much wider range of home and lifestyle products.
Features include the main retail area, a fully enclosed timber yard, an outdoor nursery and over 150 on-site car parks for customers. It will also feature a new building materials landscape yard and a bagged goods area in the nursery, both features not seen at the existing Mount Isa store.
Bunnings Area Manager, Michael Rodwell, said the new store represents a significant direct investment in the local community and will provide local customers with a new and improved offer.
"Bunnings Mount Isa has been part of the local community for about twenty years so we're really excited construction of the new store will soon be kicking off and that we'll be able to give customers a fantastic offer with the widest range of products," Mr Rodwell said.
"The existing Bunnings Mount Isa team will transfer across to the new store once complete and will be joined by new team members, who will be recruited closer to store opening.
The new Bunnings Mount Isa will be located at 89 West Street on the corner of Alma St.
