Legends of League is a community organisation that travels to remote areas of Queensland, New South Wales and Northern Territory to support local league associations through an Australian All Stars match.
The event was last held in Mount Isa in 2019, when more than 5000 spectators lined the field at Alec Inch Oval to watch the local league legends take on the Australian All Stars.
Legends of League event manager and player Craig Teevan said the Legends of League would return to Mount Isa on May 29 to take on a local team, with some fresh league stars.
"For the Australian All Stars team we have Cliff Lyons, Nathan Blacklock, Ben Hannant, Kevin Campion, Brenton Bowen, Darren Smith and John Doyle, just to name a few," Mr Teevan said.
"The Local Legends team is yet to be finalised but has already sealed the likes of Scotty Prince, Tony Schafer and local MP Robbie Katter. Local teams will also nominate past players or old boys from their club to join this team."
Mr Teevan said the Legends of League provided an opportunity to give back to the local community.
"This match is a big fundraiser for the local community, with all the game day food and beverage proceeds staying with the Mount Isa Rugby League. They then can put that money back into bettering their club," he said.
"Locals also have the opportunity to meet some of these league legends up close and personal after the game with an opportunity for photos and autographs."
The Legends of League match will take place on Saturday May 29, however the event will take place across four days and include two information school days, a sport clinic and a corporate sponsor day.
"On Wednesday and Thursday (May 26-27) are going around to the primary and secondary schools with our dream, believe, achieve program," he said.
"We are also talking about the powers of social media and advocating anti-bullying. We are strong with our messaging for that, and want to convey these messages as a new voice to the children in this community.
"On Thursday (May 27) we host a coaching clinic with six or seven players of our players, followed by our corporate day on the Friday (May 28)."
Mount Isa City Council Mayor Danielle Slade said it was exciting to invite Legends of League back to Mount Isa.
"It is very important for Mount Isa and our future that we back sporting events in our community. As a Mount Isa local I know how important sport is, not only to the child, but also the family unit," Cr Slade said.
"The great thing here is that we can still host events in Mount Isa safely with COVID-19 and we can live with COVID-19. I have confidence that the event we are hosting will be just what the doctor ordered for Mount Isa, as we crave normality and to supporting our sports."
