The Van's RV-7 aircraft was conducting a flight from Winton to Bowen when it was reported missing.

Following a search initiated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, wreckage of the aircraft was located approximately 90km south of Charters Towers.

The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation will be carried out by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
