At an Ordinary Council Meeting held on April 20, councillors voted to reject a proposal to host a Legends of League match in Cloncurry from August 27-28.

The proposal stated that Cloncurry Shire Council would be required to provide financial investment of $25,000 for the event to be held in Cloncurry, with the funds to be allocated into the 2021/2022 budget.

Mayor Greg Campbell said a Legends of League game was already scheduled for Mount Isa in May.

"With an event already in Mount Isa in coming months we thought that by having two in the same year, might take away from each other," Cr Campbell said.

"We are also hosting the Arthur Beetson Junior Carnival in a few weeks time which is about 200 or more junior players and all the Queensland Rugby League hierarchy.

"Following that event for next year I would like to aim at another Queensland Cup game or potentially a Cowboys pre-season game.

"This is the second time we have hosted that junior carnival, we do an exceptional job of it, and it shows that Cloncurry is where grassroots rugby league gets promoted and recognised. Therefore I would like to see Queensland rugby league bring a top game of professionals here."
