The now 59-year-old is an indigenous Australian former international rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s.

A Clive Churchill Medallist and two-time Dally M Medallist, he made 309 first-grade appearances with Manly, winning grand finals with them in 1987 and 1996. Lyons also represented New South Wales and Australia, being part of the successful 1990 Kangaroo Tour of Great Britain and France.

He's now listed in the team to play in the Legends of League game later this month, having played in the first game in 2019.

Lyons' love affair with Manly continues as he is a director of the club and still lives in the suburb where The North West Star caught up with him for a chat about the game.

Lyons laughed when we told him he must still be fit as he was smiling at the end of the 2019 Legends game.

"Aw, I'm slowing down a bit, the knees are starting to give out," Lyons said.

"But I still like getting away and I love a challenge."

Lyons said he has been involved with the Legends for almost 15 years.

"It's good to catch up with the old boys because we don't see each other otherwise," he said.

"(Legends) is a great way to do that."

As for what tactics they might employ on the night in Mount Isa, Lyons had a simple answer:

"Not get caught with the ball!" he said.

The Legends of League match will take place on Saturday May 29 at Alec Inch Oval.

The Legends of League was last held in Mount Isa in 2019 when a crowd of 5000 people packed Alec Inch Oval to watch a local legends side take on the Australian All Stars.
