Telstra will deliver a $5.36m upgrade of the existing 4GX mobile facility in Gununa on Mornington Island, and $1.75m at Dajarra and Lake Moondarra.

The project at Mornington Island will also upgrade the existing fibre network between Mount Isa and Point Parker to provide microwave backhaul capacity to Mornington Island. The upgrades will support the delivery of government services, as well as health and education resources. Improved connectivity will also support expanded business opportunities in cultural and fishing tourism. The project is made possible by funding from the Federal ($2.6m) and Queensland Governments ($1.33m) in addition to Telstra's contribution ($1.36m).
Lake Moondarra and Dajarra have received funding to address mobile black spot issues.
The project at Dajarra will upgrade antenna equipment and backhaul capacity at the existing 3G Telstra base station in Dajarra, to provide Telstra 4GX and Internet of Things coverage to the town and surrounding areas to support the operations of local businesses and enable remote working opportunities in the area.
Ministerial Champion for Mornington Island and Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the Queensland Government would contribute $1.3 million to the Mornington Island project, improving connectivity and supporting local businesses and families in the community.
