Richmond will host the famous trophy on Tuesday and Wednesday September 14-15, with Richmond Turf Club planning community events as part of the visit, with a stable of racing legends also accompanying the Cup as Tour Ambassadors.

The Melbourne Cup trophy was last in the North West in 2016 at Croydon and this year Richmond will join 29 other towns and cities across Australia to host the tour.

Richmond Turf Club Secretary Sally Ley said the whole town is looking forward to welcoming the Cup to town when it visits in September.

"We absolutely love racing in Richmond but we're located a long way from Flemington so to know that a piece of racing history is coming to our town in September is very exciting," Ms Ley said.

Richmond will also be part of the Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep, which will give 24 Cup Tour destinations across Australia the opportunity to be allocated a barrier for the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup.

The town which draws the barrier of the Lexus Melbourne Cup-winning horse will be presented with a cash prize of $50,000 to put towards a nominated charity for a local community initiative.

VRC Chairman Neil Wilson said this year's tour would celebrate 19 years on the road.

"The VRC is pleased to be taking the trophy back on the road after restricted travel last year, and sharing it with the nation again," Mr Wilson said.

"It allows local communities to come together to share stories, celebrate their favourite racing moments and to raise funds for local community charities and initiatives in their town."
