McKinlay Mayor Cr Philip Curr said planning and design work is about to kick off for a new bore and associated headworks.
"This new bore will replace the existing bore which is nearing the end of its useful life," Cr Curr said.
Residents have had intermittent water supply and frequently unsuitable water quality for about five years, linked to the degraded condition of the town's two bores which were 40 and 100 years old.
Earlier this year Traeger MP Robbie Katter encouraged the state government to fund the bore.
It is one of two projects in the council region which got the go ahead as part of the Recovery and Resilience Grants are funded by the federal government and delivered through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.
The drilling of new bore and associated headworks at Kynuna will cost $450,000 while the second project is for the AC mains at Julia Creek.
Council will replace around 250m of old AC water mains with 150mm PVC mains at a cost of $100,000.
The grants were open to the 14 Local Government Areas most affected by the 2019 North Queensland flood event for locally-led projects that increase resilience to natural disasters.
Cr Curr said Council applied for funding for the Kynuna bore as the number one priority and they were delighted the project was funded.
"Once the planning and design work is completed Council will go out to public tender to select a contractor," he said.
"The completed project will provide a secure water supply for the Kynuna residents with the existing bore being used as a backup if required."
