After missing out in 2020 Naidoc Week is back with a theme of Heal Country and Gidgee Healing hosts the elders luncheon event each year to recognise elders in the community for Naidoc Week.
The luncheon will take place at the Overlanders Hotel on Wednesday and Gidgee Healing's Dr Marjad Page, a local born proud Indigenous man, said Naidoc Week was special because it reminded him of who he was.
"The first thing I remember growing is that I was Kalkadoon, Waanyi and Ganggalidda," Dr Page said.
"After that I knew I was Aboriginal, I knew I was from Mount Isa, I knew I was a Queenslander, I knew I was Australia.
Dr Page said the week was special because it also reminded him of why he does what he does, and the Heal Country theme was especially relevant to him as a doctor.
"From our elders I learned country was our mother," he said.
"I'm a Christian now and I believe in Jesus Christ however country was the source of everything that he gave us.
"Looking after your country keeps us strong."
Gidgee Healing acknowledged the sponsorship of Mount Isa Mines for the luncheon.
